Biomass Boiler Project with PET UK Ltd

Lotus Electrical have just completed a project which enabled Dumfries plastic processing company Polymer Extrusion Technologies UK Ltd (PET) to install and activate a large biomass boiler at their Garroch Business Park location. Stuart McCall, Lotus Electrical’s Electrical Engineering Manager managed the administration of the project from design through to implementation.

The biomass boiler, supplied and installed by Wood Energy Biomass Heating Experts will allow PET to export electricity back to the national grid.

Biomass - organic matter used as fuel

Wood Energy install large biomass boilers that generate electricity. Put simply, biomass is organic matter used as fuel eg wood pellets, recycled waste materials, crops and landfill gases.  Wood Energy has their own team of electrical mechanical fitters to install the boiler, but Lotus Electrical’s expertise was required to install the metering and the 11kv connection that connected the new boiler to the national grid.

Complex project management

Managing big projects like this, clients are in good hands with Lotus Electrical - the team ensures that all the technical and lengthy administration requirements are met in order to sign off a successful and compliant project.

One of the biggest challenges for businesses undertaking a project this size is that things can get technical for clients very quickly, including the administration required with Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) to connect the boiler’s output to the national grid. Often the client will be left with a product that they are unable to use as the contract doesn’t tick all the final boxes.

Senior Authorised Person

Suitably qualified Senior Authorised Persons (SAP) are required to write and hold work permits that enable HV isolations and terminations for projects like PET’s Biomass Boiler. Lotus Electrical’s SAP solved that problem and ensured that the relevant permits and systems of work were in place to ensure that the project could go live. 

The project was finally signed off in March 2019.
